Did you know that the Sunflower can have different meanings depending on the culture?
In Greek mythology, sunflowers symbolise loyalty because of the myth of Clytie and Apollo. To summarise the story, a nymph named Clytie fell in love with the God of the Sun, Apollo, but he fell for a different nymph. Out of jealousy, Clytie told the nymph’s father who then buried his daughter alive, as a punishment. Then, out of anger, Apollo turned Clytie into a sunflower, and as she still loved him dearly, she would follow the sun as it moved through the sky.
In China, they are known to symbolise long life, and vitality and are given as a way to wish someone happiness and health.
Rather than be metaphorically symbolic, to Native Americans sunflowers became a source of nutrition, later using sunflower seeds in recipes as well as crushing them and using sunflower oil for foods and as a poultice to treat arthritis and rheumatism. In that perspective, the sunflower didn’t just symbolise vitality, but it helped create it.
